Addressing Neuroplastic Pain with Pain Reprocessing Therapy

Updated: Mar 16, 2022

All pain is in the brain. And despite our tendency to seek a structural cause for pain, most chronic pain that has lasted over 6 months is neuroplastic in origin, not structural.

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a new diagnosis & treatment paradigm that helps clients unlearn chronic pain by retraining their brains. The psychological re-training approach teaches the brain to no longer mis-interpret healthy signals from the body as dangerous, reducing the fear of, and eventually the onset of pain.

Nicole and I have been using neuroplastic approaches to help our clients address pain in the body for years. These include:

  • learning the essential skill of Interoception

  • supporting the nervous system to shift into a parasympathetic response increasing safety signals and lessening fear responses,

  • teaching clients how rebuild their relationship to their body’s innate ability to heal (becoming your own guru - tapping into your healing wisdom)

  • using mind maps and models to understand the mind-body-spirit connection and

  • re-educating the patterns of chronic holding that show up in the body in predictable patterns using the somatic technique of pandiculation

Science has evidence that healing from chronic pain starts in the brain. The success of the Bolder Study and the application of PRT in clinical practice proves this. The brain governs the nervous system, movement, awareness, emotions and health.

Fundamentally, however, we believe healing starts with coming back home to yourself.

This is the process of learning to reconnect with the deepest truth of who you are, learning to align and live from that place, which is what we call embodiment.

“Somatic” means to bring consciousness to being, thinking, believing and moving, so that your outer world reflects the inner essence and truth of you. This leads to embodiment and feeling connected, healthy, happy and whole.

Anytime we are mis-aligned with our truth, there is suffering, tension and pain.

Pain Reprocessing Therapy calls tuning in consciously “Somatic Tracking”. And it is the foundational technique to the overwhelmingly astounding research results that the 2021 University of Colorado Boulder Back Pain Study gathered.

The study found that nearly two-thirds (73%) of chronic back pain patients who underwent a four-week psychological treatment called Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) were pain-free or nearly pain-free post-treatment. And most maintained this relief for one year. They also showed changes in pain-generating brain regions after therapy. (Ashar YK, Gordon A, Schubiner H, et al. Effect of Pain Reprocessing Therapy vs Placebo and Usual Care for Patients With Chronic Back Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial. JAMA Psychiatry. 2022;79(1):13–23. doi:10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2021.2669).

Because these techniques align so well with what we teach, we will be including them in our new protocol program launching September 1, 2022 called Mind-Body Blueprint.

We only have 20 spots available in this extraordinary program that will use the latest science backed mindfulness and movement practices, to empower you to connect deeply with yourself, release energetic blocks, find clarity, ease, peace and joy, so you can reach your goals in life!
